European Union leaders are confident that this year’s UN climate conference, COP23, currently being held in Bonn, Germany, will once again reaffirm the international community’s commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement.

With this year’s UN climate conference, COP23, kicking off on Monday in Bonn, Germany, ministers and government officials from all over the world gather together as well as a number of business and society leaders to discuss climate concerns and reiterate the global commitment to fighting climate change.

The European Union, representing its 28 Member States, is hopeful that this year’s conference will reaffirm the global community’s commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement which was entered into agreement last year. Further, the European Union aims to continue its leading role in the fight to combat climate change.

“I want Europe to be the leader when it comes to the fight against climate change,” said President Jean-Claude Juncker earlier this year in his State of the European Union speech at the European Parliament. “Last year, we set the global rules of the game with the Paris Agreement ratified here, in this very House. Set against the collapse of ambition in the United States, Europe must ensure we make our planet great again. It is the shared heritage of all of humanity.”

“The Paris Agreement has set the direction of travel for the global transition to a modern low-carbon economy,” said Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete this week. “The increasingly frequent and intense extreme weather events we are witnessing across the world are a stark reminder of the urgency of the challenges we face. Now is the time to translate ambition into action and speed up implementation. COP23 will be a key moment to ensure that we are on track to meet our first deadline: completing the Paris work programme by 2018.”

The 23rd Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change — more commonly known as COP23 — will be presided over this year by Fiji, and is taking place from the 6th to 17th of November. The Conference will only continue to garner importance as we progress further into the deployment of the Paris Agreement and countries begin to implement medium- to long-term policies.

Of utmost interest this year, however, will be the role played by those from the American ‘We Are Still In’ coalition, who announced late last month their plans to send both a Delegation and to erect a Climate Action Center which will give a platform for the country’s environmental leaders to participate, even though the United States is no longer a member of the Paris Agreement.
