Electric delivery truck manufacturer Chanje and intelligent EV charging station (EVSE) manufacturer eMotorWerks are partnering on a new energy-as-a-service (EaaS) program to downstream fleet customers.

The new program looks beyond just billing customers a flat rate per kWh and leverages the intelligent, connected eMotorWerks chargers as part of Chanje’s core strategy to offer a complete energy service to customers. Building on top of the EVSE hardware and software platform, the new Energy-as-a-Service offering folds in energy storage management, renewable energy, and smart grid solutions for fleet managers to offer a holistic energy management service for fleets.

“We are offering fleet customers a ‘one-stop-shop’ of purpose-built electric trucks as well as the energy services, without them having to worry about the installation or energy load management,” said Bryan Hansel, CEO of Chanje. “Our collaboration with eMotorWerks allows us to deliver dynamic charging capabilities that support drivers, utilities, operators and CFOs alike. Along with our new partner, we look forward to introducing fleets to the world of smart-grid charging.”

The fully integrated solution is the first of its kind for fleet EV charging and lays the groundwork for the future of connected EV charging, connected smart homes and intelligent grid management as clean technologies continue to inject a healthy dose of Silicon Valley–style ingenuity into entrenched legacy markets.

The new offering also includes automatic dynamic load balancing that helps fleet operators maximize the charge to vehicles within the electrical service limits of any given location. This is accomplished with a series of automated, multi-tiered control algorithms and load balancing logic that will also save operators money on electricity by minimizing demand charges and peak usage charges. Think about it like an accountant that is constantly juggling all of the variables that drive up the cost of charging to keep costs down … and green through the use of renewable energy.

The functionality makes use of eMotorWerks’ JuiceNet, which enables a direct connection to utilities and allows customers to participate in demand response programs that go beyond just saving money and allow fleet operators to get paid by utilities to throttle usage down. This was the premise for the recent partnership between eMotorWerks and EDF and was the single driving force behind the recent acquisition of eMotorWerks by Enel.

“By combining our JuiceNet enabled stations with the automotive and EV expertise of Chanje, our collaboration will deliver market-leading smart grid charging products to both drivers and automakers in one seamless approach,” said Valery Miftakhov, founder and CEO of eMotorWerks. “With this collaboration, drivers will be confident that their zero-emission trucks are not only the most socially responsible and cost-effective method of transport, but also use the cleanest energy available via JuiceNet smart charging controls.”

The new solution will be integrated into Chanje’s new customer portal that gives fleet operators a one-stop shop for all their fleet needs, including vehicle telematics data and EV charging insights. The portal aims to translate the overwhelming volumes of data available to fleet operators into intelligent insights that can help drive real-world efficiencies like route improvements and charging time adjustments. With Chanje’s focus on medium-duty EVs comprised primarily of delivery trucks, the market potential for their vehicles and this solution is massive.

The energy-as-a-service offering is currently only offered to fleet operators, as it is based on leveraging scaled charging of multiple vehicles, but the eMotorWerks JuiceBox EVSE offers many of the same functions to residential and commercial EV drivers today. EV drivers can tap directly into their EVSE from the eMotorWerks app to take control of EV charging. We are currently performing a full review of the eMotorWerks EVSE so keep your eyes peeled for that in the coming weeks.
