The Power Of Individual Action (aka Why We All Need To Educate Ourselves & Take Action)

The reason I started reading CleanTechnica many years ago was that it was focused on action. It was focused on taking the problems we have with climate change and our environment today and sharing what people are doing to solve them. They talked about solutions I could put in place today and how they would make the world a better place.

That resulted in our purchase of our first solar system in 2011, energy efficiency improvements in our first house in 2012, water usage reduction in 2013, our first electric car in 2014, and on and on. Educating myself gave me the first-hand knowledge about the solutions, helped me to ask better questions about new products and solutions being discussed, and helped me to understand what was needed to scale those ideas and solutions up from the individual to local, state, federal and global levels.

I don’t pretend to have all the answers today – far from it! If anything, I now know that there are far more problems and far more solutions out there than any one person can master. Each and every one of us has a role to play in this journey. We are all passionate about different things, we all have different backgrounds and experiences, and as such, we can all bring our expertise to bear on building the solutions required in different ways.

Similarly, we are all globally distributed. We are a global team of misfits, looking to and actively working to disrupt the status quo. We are not happy with how things are going and so we’re shaking things up a bit.

Rolling these together and still riding on the influx of energy from the Climate Launchpad event last week, I am of a firm belief that to solve climate change and even to keep this planet livable, we are all going to have to step it up into the unknown and take bold action — to take initiative at local, state, federal, and global levels to affect positive change. Maybe that’s installing LEDs for yourself and your neighbors. That’s great. Maybe it’s installing solar on your roof or rallying a community solar initiative for your community. Or perhaps you want to dream bigger and want to start up a car dealership that sells only plug-in vehicles.

Wind, biomass, biogas, refrigeration, computers, solar, electric cars, and energy storage — the possibilities are endless because the problems are endless. Each problem is an opportunity and each problem taps into our unique passions differently.

My call to you, my challenge to you, is this: take action. Take one bold step towards a more sustainable future today. The keyword there is bold. Doing things we’re comfortable with … living life how we have always lived it … will not change the world. We are capable of so much more than we think we are.

I won’t beat a dead horse here, but I hope you hear what I’m saying. We are the leaders in climate change awareness and solutions. You are a leader. So, instead of just reading and talking about it, let’s do it. Lead.
