BYD has announced an effort with the Egyptian city of Alexandria to explore the possible installation of BYD’s SkyRail system in the port city. The announcement comes after BYD’s General Manager for the Middle East & Africa Auto Sales Division, AD Huang, and Chairman of the Alexandria Passenger Transportation Authority, Khaled Eleiwa, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the effort.

The agreement represents the first such effort on the African continent and shows just how quickly BYD is moving to transform mass transit and heavy vehicles to new energy solutions in all parts of the world. The installation under consideration in Alexandria, Egypt, is 128 kilometers in length and aims to alleviate chronic traffic congestion that has plagued the city.

The city is hungry for solutions and believes the lower cost and short installation time of SkyRail will provide near-term relief. Chairman of the Alexandria Passenger Transportation Authority General Khaled Eleiwa said of the project:

“BYD has a very strong reputation and reliable image especially in Egypt, we are so glad to have such kind of cooperation step with BYD, and we hope to see the SkyRail operates in Alexandria as soon as possible”.

BYD has maintained operations in Egypt for the last 13 years and is eager to expand its relationship with the African country. BYD’s AD Huang shared some of the benefits of the SkyRail system:

“BYD’s SkyRail is a clean, affordable and safe way for people to commute. It also utilizes limited road space in towns and cities while minimizing disruption to local communities.”

The BYD SkyRail system takes advantage of the lower effort and lower cost of above-ground construction to deliver massive savings to cities for comparable transit capabilities. SkyRail is expected to be one fifth of the cost of a comparable system and can be built three times faster. Run those numbers through your brain again. That’s massive!

Instead of spending $5 billion on a subway system, the same capacity and functionality could be built for $1 billion, and 3 times faster. That is a game-changer and the exact reason so many cities, like Alexandria, are looking to BYD for solutions.

BYD has already conducted feasibility studies in more than 100 cities around the world, with more than 10 strategic partnerships formed out of the efforts. Construction will kick off in another 20 cities around the world next year. And, of course, the first installation of BYD’s SkyRail in Yinchuan was announced in September.
