The self-driving vehicle vision systems tech firm Velodyne LiDAR has more than quadrupled production of its high-performance LiDAR sensors in recent days in response to rising global demand for the product, according to a new press release from the company.

This increase in production means that “Velodyne LiDAR’s sensors are immediately available via distribution partners in Europe, Asia Pacific, and North America, with industry standard lead-times for direct contracts,” according to the company.

“Velodyne leads the market in real-time 3D LiDAR systems for fully autonomous vehicles,” commented David Hall, Velodyne LiDAR Founder and CEO. “With the tremendous surge in autonomous vehicle orders and new installations across the last 12 months, we scaled capacity to meet this demand, including a significant increase in production from our 200,000 square-foot Megafactory.”

The press release provides more: “Velodyne LiDAR Inc has bolstered this aggressive production expansion by doubling the number of its full-time employees over the past six months. These employees operate across three facilities in California, including the company’s new Megafactory in San Jose, its long-standing manufacturing facility in Morgan Hill, and the Velodyne Labs research center in Alameda.”

As some further background here, Velodyne has functioned as a pioneer in the 3D real-time LiDAR sensor space that has proven integral to the development of many firm’s self-driving vehicle solutions. To date, thousands of vehicles around the world have been outfitted with the company’s LiDAR tech. With the commercialization of autonomous vehicles looming, the potential is there for the company to now expand rapidly as the sector grows.
