Earlier this month, the governments of India and the European Union adopted an historic Leaders’ Joint Statement on clean energy and climate change, recommitting to partner with one another on implementing the Paris Climate Agreement and boosting clean energy cooperation.

Announced at the EU-India summit held in New Delhi on the 6th of October, leaders from the two governments signed a Leaders’ Joint Statement in which they declared “climate action and the clean energy transition as an imperative for the future development of our societies” and confirmed their individual commitments to the Paris Climate Agreement, and recommitted “to step up cooperation to enhance” implementation of the Agreement and “meet its ambitious goals.”

The European Union and India have also agreed to further develop their Partnership through facilitating business-to-business interaction between their two countries, designed to implement climate action commitments for businesses and boost development of the clean energy sector, as well as expanding cooperation in other areas such as green cooling, solar pumping, energy storage, and advanced biofuels.

The 14th annual Summit between India and the European Union (EU) was held in New Delhi on 6 October 2017. The Republic of India was represented by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The EU was represented by Mr. Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, and Mr. Jean Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission.

“This first-ever statement is testimony of our highest political commitment to the Paris Agreement and the clean energy transition,” said European Commissioner for climate action and energy Miguel Arias Cañete. “Today, the EU and India are joining forces to help put the Paris Agreement into practice and bolster energy cooperation, including new fields of cooperation on energy efficiency, smart grids and low-emissions mobility. By working together, we can make a difference and jointly lead the global clean energy race.”
