Recharged, Rebooted, Reborn … Maybe: Detroit Electric

September 10th, 2017 by

Day to day, it is true CleanTechnica focuses on the major players in the EV landscape. Still, it is refreshing to spy smaller ventures and lesser known EV faces. Diversity (in everything) is one key to health. Detroit Electric recently shared outline sketches of three future models it claims we’ll be seeing over the next three years — a sports car, a crossover, and a large saloon. Let’s hope.

As a reminder, Detroit Electric was an original innovator of the electric car. The initial Detroit Electric opened shop in 1907, over a century ago. The company reignited in new form in 2008, but it has apparently taken a while to get rolling again.

It is rolling now — recharged, rebooted, reborn. A new Detroit Electric press release notes that the UK-based electric vehicle startup outlined its future product plans during its first ever appearance at Cenex’s Low Carbon Vehicles (LCV) 2017 event on September 6 and 7 at Millbrook in Bedfordshire.

The British-based company’s presence at the event was a start of major recruitment strategy for EV engineering talent, enabled by a $1.8 billion dollar joint venture deal. The company expects between 150 and 200 posts to filled by next spring.

Chief Technical Officer and Company Director Richie Frost explains: “Having secured the solid financial foundation to embark on our business plan, we’re now building up our team to enable us to deliver our ambitious vehicle engineering programmes.”
