Irizar e-mobility has been awarded the contract to supply Madrid with its first 15 electric buses, and to supply Barcelona with its first 4 electric articulated buses.

With regard to the 15 electric buses ordered by Empresa Municipal de Transportes and the Madrid City Council, the 12-meter buses will be accompanied by the purchase of 15 fast chargers (100 kW). These buses are expected to be delivered in December.

With regard to the four 18.73-meter electric articulated buses ordered by Transportes Metropolitanos de Barcelona — which represent the beginning of an effort to transition the H16 bus line to entirely all-electric buses — those are expected to enter service by June 2018. They will be accompanying the two 12-meter electric buses that have been operating in Barcelona since late 2014 as part of the European Commission’s ZeEus project. (Editor’s Note: In 2013, when I was in Barcelona for EVS27, TMB was near the beginning of a pilot project with a BYD electric bus. The Director of TMB told me then that if things continued to go as they were and as projected by BYD, the cost of the bus would be comparable to a conventional bus — within a few years of operation. That’s not taking into account air pollution or noise costs of conventional buses.)

In addition, the city of Valencia will also be purchasing its first electric bus from Irizar, and the city of Bilbao will be purchasing a further two 12-meter electric buses. These units are expected to all be delivered before the end of 2017.

Green Car Congress provides some further information: “These buses are being manufactured at the new premises of Irizar e-mobility (an Irizar Group company) located in the town of Aduna, Gipuzkoa. This marks the beginning of serial production and the creation of the first 100 jobs in this company.

“Irizar e-mobility is the most recently created company within the Irizar Group and offers comprehensive turnkey electromobility solutions. The product range includes 10.8m and 12m city buses, articulated or bi-articulated buses and other electric vehicles to serve cities. Irizar e-mobility’s first 100% electric, 18m BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) unit is completing durability and reliability testing prior to its distribution to customers, and it will be launched onto the market at the end of this year.”
