Neematic is rocking the world of the electric bicycle with another impressive 50 mph off-road FR/1 e-bike that is as nice to see as its performance indicates. It just begs the question. Are we still in e-bike territory or have we crossed over to glorified electric mopeds and entry-level electric motorcycles?

E-bikes are all the rage, and we’ve covered our fair share of the news on CleanTechnica. Staying on top of everything is virtually impossible. From humble and heavy foreign electric bicycles thrown together in haste, often shipping with the wrong chargers resulting in the infamous lithium fires. Giving a battery the wrong charger is a sure recipe for disaster. Dual-electric motor fat tire e-bikes to bamboo, nothing will phase us more than much more performance! And the Neematic 50 mph FR/1 e-bike fits the bill.

The company has been around for a few years consistently offering e-bikes. Its Neematic Freeride prototype model shown to the public in 2016 received so much interest, it is now taking reservations for the first limited production of its FR/1, the newer and more powerful e-bike from the company. And make no mistake, this is no garden variety commuter. This full off-road lean and mean e-bike machine will set you back $9,100 plus taxes and shipping costs, which is roughly €8000 for unbridled fun in forests, mountains, and deserts.

Neematic 50 mph FR/1 E-Bike, Technically Speaking

If you have to do things right, do it right the first time, right? And if the first time you don’t succeed, then at least outdo your last product and service next. In this instance, the Neematic 50 mph FR/1 e-bike does this very well. Pushing a lively 15 kW permanent-magnet brushless mid-drive electric motor, which minimizes sprung mass and sprung inertia, coupled to a 2.2 kWh lithium ion removable battery back and voila, you have the perfect weekend trail adventure e-bike.

And when it comes to range, the FR/1 offers an impressive 62-mile with brisk accelerations certain to get most adrenaline junkies satisfied… at least for a while.

Shifting is handled by an integrated Pinion P1.9 XR 9-speed gearbox with which the Neematic 50 mph FR/1 e-bike offers regenerative braking, as well as a pair of rock solid and biting disc brakes. All of this rides on a Fox 40 fork with 203 mm travel leaving a Hope Tech 3 V4 setup for hard braking on those downhills. Lastly, a rear shock helps smooth out tracks with its adjustable compression and rebound.

This off-road adventure beast is capable of a top speed of about 50 mph (80 kph). The estimated range per charge is about 62 miles, or roughly 100 km, with a 2.5 hour charge time. And what about the weight? Sit down, as the bike weighs in at a porky 114.6 lb (52 kg)!

Neematic 50 mph FR/1 E-Bike, E-Bike. E-Scooter or Electric Lightweight Motorcycle?

Some e-bikes blur the lines between what we normally consider a bicycle, a scooter/moped, and a motorcycle. In fact, many so-called off-road e-bikes are perfectly at ease in between a highly souped up e-bike or a detuned electric motorcycle. No matter what, they aren’t that far removed from professional material upgrades, meaning its base is a great platform for professional modifications.

And perhaps what I like best is the choice to either use the electric drive in throttle mode, meaning twist and accelerate, or pedal and have the FR/1 assist you. OK, OK, yes, there is a certain amount of snobbism around e-assist and pure electric, but I think a choice is always a great thing to have under any circumstances. After all, there are times when I’m tired and that electric lever comes in mighty handy when I just want to get home.

Closer to a dirt bike than a commuter, this Neematic 50 mph FR/1 e-bike means serious business. The suspension compression goes well beyond the position of the swing arm. This means the Neematic FR/1 e-bike can absorb and take on a lot beating. It can also claim some very massive jumps in relative comfort and safety.

You can follow Neematic on Medium, as well as Instagram and Facebook.

Although some still claim that riding an e-bike is cheating, this latest research proves that it is exercise and has great value.

The world of e-bikes is a very different one than the limited and restricted choice of electrified bicycles we had barely a decade ago. Today e-bikes range from a few hundred dollar conversions to full fledged off-road weekend warrior electric monsters. The Neematic 50 mph FR/1 e-bike sits in that category.
