DONG Energy & Siemens Sell Offshore Wind Transport Company A2SEA

World-leading wind energy companies DONG Energy and Siemens announced earlier this month that they had agreed to sell offshore wind transportation and installation company A2SEA to Belgian marine engineering company GeoSea.

Not only do I think it’s important to cover these smaller stories about developments and maneuvering within the larger renewable energy industry, and particularly within big-name companies like DONG Energy and Siemens, but I also have a fondness for big construction and engineering toys equipment.

Like that. And this.

Both photos are of A2SEA’s wind turbine installation vessel, the SEA INSTALLER, which is a ship with legs — legs that extend down into the water and help the ship become a wind turbine installation platform in water depths of up to 60 meters.

So it’s entirely possible that I’ve taken this relatively small and insignificant wind energy industry acquisition story as a sneaky way to find and share photos of one of my favorite big toys pieces of engineering equipment with you all.

DONG Energy and Siemens, both massive wind energy companies in their own rights, have owned A2SEA since 2009, however, ownership of this company is no longer within the scope of each companies’ core businesses, and therefore it was a natural move to look to divest themselves of this company. And, just as naturally, it was obvious that Belgian company GeoSea would be a perfect new home for A2SEA.

“I’m pleased that we’ve now found a new owner of A2SEA,” said Thomas Dalsgaard, Executive Vice President in DONG Energy and Chairman of A2SEA.

“A2SEA is a pioneer in the industry and one of the leading players in the market for offshore wind turbine installation. Owning an offshore wind turbine installation company, however, isn’t within the scope of our core business, and we’ve therefore been looking for a new owner.”

“With the new owner, I feel confident that A2SEA will be in very good hands. GeoSea is in a position to contribute to A2SEA’s continued stable operating results and ensure the continued positive development of the offshore wind installation company. Based on A2SEA’s industry leading expertise and track record for installation, we expect A2SEA to still be a key supplier to DONG Energy’s future projects. This transaction won’t change that fact.”

“The activities of A2SEA represent a strong and complementary fit with GeoSea’s operations,” added Luc Vandenbulcke, Managing Director, GeoSea. “The combined organisation will be well positioned to provide a broader range of integrated services and solutions to offshore wind energy customers. GeoSea will continue to build on existing customer relationships and ensure a safe and reliable delivery of current and future projects. With the acquisition of A2SEA, the company will also gain a group of highly skilled and specialised employees.”
