BMW i Batteries Jump Into Boats
Love that smooth, quiet, clean drive of the BMW i3? Now, electric mobility via those BMW i batteries has hit the sea as well as the land — these batteries are not only in electric cars, but also motor boats, sailing yachts, and commercial marine applications such as water taxis.
Torqeedo is leading the transition of this state-of-the-art automotive battery technology to boats, with a direct supplier agreement with BMW for its high-capacity batteries.
Note that these batteries offer the highest energy density currently available in boating. The cost per kilowatt-hour is also a record, but this time a record low.

BMW’s batteries, which use Samsung battery cells, have gotten high praise from notable industry experts. It is not surprising that a company looking to bring electric boating to the next level would tap these batteries to lead the way.
Torqeedo continues, “This design is ideal for boat applications which may require superior shock resistance. The prismatic cell design allows efficient cooling, a compact size and even temperature distribution within the battery – with an extremely rugged structure protecting the cells. An optional, progressive cooling system guarantees maximum performance and a long service life even in high ambient and water temperatures.”
