London Upgrading Around 5,000 Buses To Meet Euro VI Emissions Standards
As part of the Mayor of London’s ongoing efforts to reduce the city’s growing air pollution problems, a new retrofit program has been announced that will result in around 5,000 buses being upgraded so as to meet the Euro VI emissions standard.
The program is reportedly expected to slash the emissions of the 5,000 or so buses in question by up to 95%. The retrofits are expected to lead to London’s entire bus fleet meeting Euro VI standards by September 2020 at the latest.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, also revealed in his announcement that the £86.1 million program will result in the creation of over 40 new apprenticeships — the new apprentices being employed by the 5 suppliers appointed to retrofit the exhaust systems. Those suppliers are Baumot Twintec, Eminox, HJS, Amminex, and Proventia.
A press release from the London government provides more: “Transport for London (TfL) will work with bus operators and five chosen suppliers to install the new bespoke exhaust systems which will reduce nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. Diesel Particulate filters will also be installed alongside this Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) equipment to reduce air pollution.”
And the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, commented: “We know that pollution from our roads is a major contributor to London’s toxic air. That’s why we are working so hard to introduce new clean buses on our streets and why we are continually looking for innovative ways to clean up the most polluting buses. There’s no doubt that by cutting the emissions of more than half of the fleet by up to 95%, this innovative retrofit programme is going to make a huge difference to Londoners.”
As a reminder here, London is currently phasing out diesel-only buses. As of 2018, all new double-decker buses will be required to be either hybrids, full electrics, or powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Also, all buses operating in the downtown London Ultra-Low Emission Zone will have to be Euro VI hybrid standard by the year 2019.
