Divestment actions continue around the world, with people from diverse backgrounds coming together to fight climate change where it counts — in their financial statements. Here is a roundup of stories that highlight divestment activities from May 2017.

New Yorkers Use Trump Tower to Teach about Divestment

Hundreds of New Yorkers who witnessed major environmental rollbacks on the federal level joined in divestment actions, agreeing that New Yorkers must be more steadfast than ever before. They joined the global wave of divestment action that took place in over 45 countries around the world recently, kicking off the week of divestment events with a press conference and lobby day in Albany.

Dozens of citizens called on the state legislature to divest the state pension fund from fossil fuels, and three more co-sponsors agreed to support the divestment bill, which would require the New York State pension fund to divest $175 billion in holdings from fossil fuels.

On the next day, New Yorkers assembled at Trump Tower and called on the city to stand with the people, not Trump’s cabinet of climate deniers. Under tight security, organizers brought 150+ people onto the Public Plaza of Trump Tower to host a Teach-In and Rally on Divestment. Rev. Billy and his choir from the Church of Stop Shopping opened up the rally with some climate change gospel, and 350.org’s May Boeve spoke about the climate justice movement.

Later in the week of action, business and finance leaders convened to host a panel on divestment and reinvestment. A “Climate, Jobs, Justice” accountability forum brought together over 600 community members, labor union members, workers, students, and community organizers. Comptroller Scott Stringer and Public Advocate Tish James were interviewed about their commitment to climate, jobs, and justice for all New Yorkers.

These various attempts to break New York’s ties to the fossil fuel industry showed that the movement for climate justice is stronger and more intense than ever before.

Tar Sands Expansion is Target of First Nations and Indigenous Group Action toward Divestment

An integrated grassroots divestment campaign of Indigenous groups and 121 First Nations and Tribes has risen to fight against the banks funding Dakota Access and all four tar sands oil pipelines currently proposed out of Canada.

Grand Chief Derek Nepinak of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs spoke about the Treaty Alliance Against Tar Sands Expansion.

“We call on all banks and financial institutions to withdraw their investments in the corporations proposing to build new pipelines to carry even more tar sands oil out of Canada. We call on individuals, businesses, organizations, and governments to withdraw their money from these financial institutions until they divest from these pipeline companies who are violating our rights, our treaties and our sovereignty. We stand in solidarity with the Tribes of the Great Sioux Nation and all communities impacted by the Dakota Access Pipeline, and also call for divestment from any financial institution invested in Energy Transfer Partners.”

The Mazaska Talks website (“mazaska” is Lakota for “money” and homage to the resistance at Standing Rock) is a centralized resource for this campaign, with detailed financial data as well as tools for taking action. The campaign targets all 64 banks that currently provide financing to Energy Transfer Partners or the three companies proposing new tar sands pipelines:

• TransCanada (Keystone XL and Energy East),
• Kinder Morgan (TransMountain Expansion), and
• Enbridge (Line 3 Expansion).

A list of primary targets includes the 17 banks that fund all of these companies, as well as the convenors of major multi-bank credit facilities: Bank of America, Bank of Montreal, Barclays, BNP Paribas, CIBC, Citi, Crédit Agricole, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase, Mizuho, MUFG, RBC, SMBC, ScotiaBank, TD Bank, and Wells Fargo.

Yale’s Hidden Investments in Fossil Fuels: Where is the Justice?

Fossil Free Yale is a group of students who know what is causing anthropogenic climate change: the extraction and combustion of fossil fuels. Faced with a rapidly warming planet, they campaign toward a more just and sustainable future through a shift away from the fossil fuel industry, whose business model relies unequivocally on the extraction and combustion of fossil fuels.

Working with 33 Wall Street to build transparency and openness at Yale University, Fossil Free Yale has attempted to unveil the investments that, over the last three decades, Yale has shifted from public equity into private equity, thus restricting the availability of basic information.

Yale is heavily invested in such carbon-intensive processes as coal and fracking even though many of the companies are being sued by local communities. Yale acquired stock worth $230 million in Antero, one of the fastest growing U.S. fracking companies, held $59 million in oil and gas with Merit Energy Company, whose CEO is a Trump donor with a 20-year-long relationship to Yale, kept $109 million with a fund manager that placed Yale money in the Canadian fracking and tar sands production cycle, and invested $318 million with Farrallon, an estimated $2 million of which are in Whitehaven coal, the owner of Australia’s huge and heavily protested Maules Creek coal mine.

ExxonMobil Shareholders Demand Risk Analysis of Climate Change on their Portfolios

In what was a reversal of previous sentiment, shareholders of ExxonMobil have insisted that the corporation outline risks posed by its policies involving climate change. The vote comes on the brink of an expected Trump administration announcement that the U.S. will pull out of the Paris climate agreement. According to the New York Times, while the ExxonMobil stockholders’ resolution is nonbinding, CEO Darren W. Woods stated that the board would be reviewing the vote, as it represented a majority view.

The ExxonMobil vote symbolizes the shift to climate concerns and actions in the business sector. The vote against management marked an important step for greater disclosure and transparency about the financial fallout of climate change.

It is widely understood, according to the Washington Post, that financial advisory firms BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street had cast votes against management on this key proxy resolution. BlackRock and Vanguard hold the largest shares of ExxonMobil, owning 13%, or $43.6 billion worth, of the company’s stock. State Street Global Advisers manages 5.1% of the stock.

Indeed, BlackRock said that climate disclosure is one of its top priorities and that “our patience is not infinite.” In late 2015, the investment firm published a white paper titled, The Price of Climate Change: Global Warming’s Impact on Portfolios.

“This is an unprecedented victory for investors in the fight to ensure a smooth transition to a low carbon economy,” said New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, a trustee of the New York Common Retirement Fund which co-sponsored the proxy resolution. “Climate change is one of the greatest long-term risks we face in our portfolio and has direct impact on the core business of ExxonMobil,” he said in a statement.

The resolution was led by the New York State Pension Fund, the Church of England investment fund, and dozens of others.

Top UK Investment Fund Managers at BMO Global Asset Management Pull Back on Pollution

“One of the UK’s top investment fund managers, BMO Global Asset Management, has committed to divesting £20 million in fossil fuel investments, including shares in BHP Billiton,” CleanTechnica‘s Joshua Hill reported.

The move will “exclude all companies with fossil fuel reserves from its Responsible Funds range as part of a larger updated climate change policy. The divestment will take place immediately for the company’s Global and Emerging Market strategies within its Responsible Funds range, and will extend to the remaining three UK-based funds by January 1, 2020.”

The Global Divestment Mobilization Week of Action

Thousands of actions from Brazil to Belgium and Cape Town to Jakarta demanded that cities, banks, pension funds, faith groups, universities, and museums stand on the right side of history and stop supporting the companies causing the climate crisis. The actions spoke to how conscientious investors can no longer accept that short-term profit for a few is prioritized over preventing a global climate crisis with catastrophic human and habitat consequences. It was a productive week in which three pension funds and five universities agreed to divest from fossil fuels.
