Efficient Drivetrains has announced that it has been selected by four major Chinese automotive OEMs to supply and integrate its EDI PowerDrive 6000 systems into their 8 and 12 meter buses.

The EDI PowerDrive 6000 is a purpose-built plug-in hybrid electric or fully electric drivetrain for Class 6 medium-duty commercial fleet vehicles that enables vehicle manufacturers to add plug-in hybrid or electric drivetrains to their vehicles without the investment in R&D required to develop them from the ground up in house.

The new agreement links EDI with Chinese OEMs Shaanxi Automotive, Ankai, Xiamen Jinlong, and Yaxing Motors, who have ramped up efforts to offer electrified buses in response to government mandates. Partnering with a supplier like EDI allows them to rapidly upgrade their products to electric-capable vehicles while they get familiar with the technology and likely develop their own plug-in powertrains in house.

Interest in EDI solutions continues to increase as government pressure to slash emissions of new vehicles mounts in China. The new agreements come on the heels of EDI’s successful delivery of 40 bus drivetrains earlier this year to Yaxing Motors for the city of Jiangsu Sheyang. The new buses will replace a fleet of diesel buses and enable a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of over 40%.

EDI is based in California with its Headquarters in Milpitas, with its Vehicle Integration and Support Center in nearby Dixon, California. EDI has partnered with Chinese OEMs since 2010 on solutions for vehicle classes 2 through 8. In response to the spike in demand from China for low-emission retrofit and drivetrain upgrade solutions, EDI expects to close orders for several hundred more bus drivetrains by Q3 of this year.

Industry reports show that, in 2016, the electrified bus market in China grew to approximately 116,000, which represents 20% of the overall bus market. Looking farther out, analysts expect the Chinese plug-in bus market to reach 200,000 vehicles by 2020, before achieving full electrification around 2027. While the near-term focus is on China, similar increases in adoption of electrified buses are occurring in markets around the world.
