A newly launched unified solar and energy storage system targets the residential market. According to its press release, Empower’s Genesys 8K™ Modular Smart Home Energy Platform streamlines “the deployment of residential solar and energy storage systems without compromise of performance or cost.”

On the company website it says:

Empower’s Genesys 8K is the only rooftop solar power electronics product to achieve a balance of superior product characteristics in SKU simplification, reliability and system efficiency without compromise to cost.

  • Low voltage, series connected AC
  • 1 inverter SKU for all residential systems
  • No trunk cable or proprietary connectors
  • Inherent compliance with NEC 2014 & 2017 Rapid Shutdown
  • Plug-and-play design for quick, easy installation
  • Energy storage ready system

I emailed Mika Nuotio, CEO of Empower Micro Systems, “What problems does this system address that were inadequately addressed by previous systems?”

He responded, “A unique characteristic of residential smart energy applications, whether solar, energy storage or hybrid solar + energy storage systems, is that the energy economics is specific for each individual home owner. Optimal energy economics for each homeowner is achieved through right-sized power rating (kW) and energy production or capacity (kWh). Previous systems address this right-sizing challenge through either a multitude of Stock Keeping Units (SKUs), complex electrical cabling systems, or both. The modular Genesys 8K platform requires only two power electronics SKUs using a simple electrical cabling system built on standard household alternating current wiring.”

Third Party Validation Coming

I asked,Do you have independent verification of the superiority of Empower’s system?”

Nuotio replied:

“The underlying power electrics architecture in the modular Genesys 8K inherently yields SKU consolidation and simple cabling systems, by design.”

“The uncompromising performance characteristics have been confirmed by Empower through extensive laboratory testing with third-party validation expected in the near future.”

Nuotio has more than twenty-five years experience in the solar power electronics, semiconductor, and telecommunication sectors. He is a former co-founder and EVP of Marketing of Array Power, a module integrated solar power microinverter manufacturer.” Nuotio also held leadership positions with MagnaChip Semiconductor, Infineon Technologies, and Ericsson.

He partnered with entrepreneur Jon Bonanno and power electronics expert Dr. Milan Ilic to found Empower Microsystems in Santa Clara, California, during 2011.
