New figures from Navigant Research have confirmed Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas as the world’s leading supplier of wind turbines, with more than 6,445 megawatts of capacity reported in the second half of 2016 — almost 3,000 megawatts more than in the first half of 2016.

Navigant Research published its Wind Turbine Order Tracker report this week, becoming the third of the big-name energy technology consultancies to weigh in on the wind turbine industry and confirm Vestas as the world’s leading vendor. In February, Bloomberg New Energy Finance revealed that Vestas had reclaimed the top spot again from 2015’s one-time leader Goldwind, supplying 8.7 gigawatts (GW) of turbines in 2016. In April, MAKE Consulting confirmed these figures, showing that Vestas had in fact stretched its lead by nearly three percentage points to its nearest rival, GE (Goldwind had dropped to third).

Published this week, the report from Navigant Research looked at the second half of 2016, based on all publicly announced wind turbine orders between July and December. Of the nearly 15,000 megawatt (MW) total capacity supplied during the second half of last year, across 24 countries and from 11 separate vendors, Vestas lead with more than 6,445 MW of capacity reported.

“Wind farm developers are becoming more willing to explore regions of less than ideal wind resources and wind turbine manufacturers are using larger rotors and higher hub heights to maximize capacity factors in these regions,” said Adam Wilson, research analyst with Navigant Research. “Vestas is a good example of this — the company’s average turbine rating for orders received in the second half of 2016 decreased from 2.96 MW to 2.8 MW while average rotor diameter actually increased slightly to 114.5 meters from 112.7 meters.”

Gamesa jumped into second place for the second half of 2016 (as distinct from GE and Goldwind who took second and third sport respectively for the whole year-2016) with 2,011 MW, while MHI Vestas — a joint offshore wind venture between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Vestas — took third place thanks to four large offshore wind orders. The top five were rounded out by Nordex and Senvion, with Siemens surprisingly falling to the sixth spot — though, Navigant notes this is “in large part to the company’s typical selective turbine order reporting.”

Looking at the figures regionally, the Asia Pacific region led the way in the second half with 4,099.5 MW, thanks to strong showings from India and Australia. The United States helped the North America region jump ahead of Europe for the second sport, with 3,688.1 MW and 3,522.8 MW respectively.
