The 5 fleets that will be trialling Ford’s upcoming Transit Custom plug-in hybrid (PHEV) van in London, as part of a pilot program beginning there this fall, have now been revealed by Ford.

The program, which is being supported by Transport for London (TfL) and the UK government-funded Advanced Propulsion Centre, will involve a year-long trial of 20 Ford Transit Custom PHEV vans. It is intended to see the vans run entirely on electric power when within inner city limits where emissions controls would be most effective.

The 5 fleet operators in question are: Transport for London, Metropolitan police, Clancy Plant, Addison Lee, and British Gas. Together the participating fleets represent “a cross-section of city-based businesses that will integrate the vans into their day-to-day operations including the Metropolitan Police with two Transit Custom plug-in hybrid electric vans: one marked for second response to traffic accidents and one un-marked as a forensic support unit,” as reported by Green Car Congress.

With regard to the 3 vans headed to Transport for London, those will be used for freight duty. The other fleet uses pretty much speak for themselves.

Ford will be gathering data related to operational, financial, and environmental performance from all of the fleet operators. These will be used to inform future decision making as regards Ford’s electrified van lineup plans.

As we reported previously, the pilot program is part of Ford’s $4.5 billion push to introduce 13 electrified vehicles over the next half decade.
