The first large-scale offshore wind energy project to be developed in Brittany, and one of the first in France, has moved a step closer towards construction after receiving all three administrative authorizations required to construct and operate.

Ailes Marines, the French-based company in charge of developing, constructing, and operating the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm in the Bay of Saint-Brieuc in Brittany, announced this week that it had received the three administrative authorizations required to construct and operate the project. Specifically, the company received the following authorizations from Prefet of the Cotes-d’Armor:

  • The concession of utilization of the maritime public domain
  • The Unique Authorization for the installation’s Structures, Works and Activities (AU IOTA) integrating the authorization request in article L.214-3 of the Environmental Code (authorization “Water Law”) and the derogation request to the prohibition to violate the protected habitats and species
  • The work Project Authorization (APO)

“We are delighted to receive the authorisations, which validates the work undertaken over the past five years by Ailes Marines and its contractors to deliver all of the necessary surveys,” said Emmanuel Rollin, Ailes Marines Project Director. “These efforts have been rewarded, and we are very proud of that. We warmly thank all the people who supported and who accompanied us in developing this project so far. This is an important day for the project, which leads us in to a new phase of development, and a step further towards the project being delivered.”

Ailes Marine — a joint company owned by Iberdrola and AVEL VOR — was awarded the contract for the project in April 2012, for the development of the 496 MW project, which will be made up of 62 Adwen 8 MW wind turbines. The project is expected to generate 1,850 GWh of electricity per year, approximately equivalent to the needs of 850,000 households. The project is also expected to generate up to 2,000 jobs, and is the result of €2.5 billion from Iberdrola and AVEL VOR.
