When I notice a large city vehicle that is fully electric or a utility truck that is electric or even a hybrid, I breathe a sigh of relief. It is nice to know the local city transit administration is thinking. Likewise, in Los Angeles, the world is not mad.

Plug In America recently shared, “Travelers who park at Los Angeles International Airport will be taking all-electric shuttle buses from WallyPark’s lots to catch their flights. As we noted last month, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles are becoming electrified, with deployments in transit districts and fleets throughout the US.”

The press release continues that Phoenix Motorcars, a manufacturer of electric vehicles for the fleet market, is deploying 16 of its Zero Emissions Utility Shuttle (ZEUS) buses to WallyPark Premier, a subsidiary of the L&R Group of Companies. These leaders in the airport shuttle bus industry are bringing the 14-passenger fully electric buses to service off-airport parking at Los Angeles International Airport.

“This deployment makes WallyPark Premier the 1st all electric airport parking depot in the nation. Phoenix will continue electrifying and deploying buses to other L&R parking depots such as Joe’s Parking, Avistar and Airport Center,” Plug In America adds. “Each of the buses is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60 tons of carbon dioxide per year, compared to a conventional diesel shuttle. All buses have fast-charging capability, which allows full charging to take place in less than three hours.”

As is increasingly the case, these electric shuttle buses are also expected to save operators (and maybe end customers) money. “In addition to providing a great driving experience, we look to provide our clients sizeable savings in fueling and maintenance costs,” said Phoenix Director of Sales Tarek Helou. “L&R’s vision will change the market landscape and make a positive impact in the Airport, Hotel and Parking industry.”

As we’ve been writing for years, fleets are an ideal early market for EV adoption. Phoenix clearly gets this and explains why: “Phoenix Motorcars is focused on commercial and government fleet customers. Fleets are the ideal customers for EVs, due to their vehicle usage patterns, centralized operation and high fuel consumption. In addition to the environmentally friendly aspects of EVs, they offer significant cost benefits over the total life of the vehicle.”

It is great to get news of a brighter future. WallyPark’s transition brings hope that thinking people will bring us to a clean future sooner than we often think. I long for the time when I can board an electric shuttle bus, an electric plane — or other kind of flying machine — and then an electric train or taxi on the other end.
