Following the purchase last year of an all-electric Orange EV T-Series yard truck, the intermodal rail yard operator Rail Management Services has reportedly opted to place a followup order of 9 more of the Orange EV T-Series yard trucks.

I guess that things are going well with the new electric truck then, huh?

The Vice President of Maintenance, Safety, Legal and Operations for Rail Management Services (RMS), Ed Morgenthaler (who noted that the Class 1 Chicago yard where the first truck is deployed is one of the top 5 toughest of the company’s 40+ facilities in the US) commented:

“We put the Orange EV truck in Chicago at one of our toughest ramps. It’s one of the larger facilities in the country and has been active for decades, making the terrain harsh on hostlers. The Chicago winters also play an important role in it being a difficult location. Frankly, I was surprised. I didn’t expect the truck to be as reliable as it is.”

To further put that statement into perspective, RMS currently hosts a national fleet of more than 700 trucks, from various manufacturers — so, clearly, the Orange EV T-Series yard truck is a quality offering.

Green Car Congress provides more: “Orange EV offers a range of configurations built to meet site-specific requirements while managing cost. The RMS reorder is consists of nine Extended Duty (160 kWh) trucks, each with galvanized frames but built to three different configurations: new, on-road (DOT compliant), with standard onboard charging; re-manufactured (aka re-powered), off-road, with offboard fast charging; and re-manufactured, off-road, with standard onboard charging.”

The 9 new trucks will and are being worked into various existing fleets — 5 are headed to the same Chicago railyard that the first one is deployed at, and the 4 others are headed to sites in New York.

In addition to potential large fuel and maintenance cost savings, the use of such trucks has value with regard to air quality — Orange EV estimates are that “the per truck emissions eliminated in rail intermodal hub operations annually can be up to 160 tons CO2, 1.7 tons NOx, 1.6 tons CO, and 80 kg PM.”

Considering the effects that NOx and particulate matter air pollution have on human health, cognitive abilities, preterm birth rates, and even the effectiveness of antibiotic treatment, those are notable reductions.
