Germany has a well established track record of leading the charge towards renewables with the full court press of the Energiewende but the push into electric vehicles or e-mobility as it is known in Europe, has been lackluster. The clash of old and new came to a head in Germany this week with Tesla beating out BMW, securing the “Best Future Mobility Brand” in the German Best Brands Awards at Bayerischer Hof in Munich.

Tesla is no stranger to winning awards, having recently joined Apple and Google on the prestigious Interbrands’ Top 100 Brands List and being ranked #1 auto in brand experience.

Tesla winning this award is more than just a look to the future as Germans are very loyal to their home town favorite car companies with 1 in 7 Germans working in the auto industry. In some cities, like the town of Stuttgart the ratio is as high as 1 in 3 working in the auto industry and as such, it is difficult to understate just how important the personal automobile is to Germans.

This recent award is as close to an award ‘from the people’ as it gets. Franz-Peter Falke, President of Markenverband eV put it this way:

“The unique thing about Best Brands is the selection of the winners, which has never been hit by a jury. Every year, Best Brands determines the strength of a brand based on genuine consumer adoption. The only thing to be awarded is the tightly woven bond between consumers and brands, which is precisely the result of the annual award for the best brands in Germany, with their timeless charm and credibility.”

While awards are nice, they don’t pay the bills. What they do, however, is to show the world what the German public is thinking when it comes time to purchase a new vehicle. This recent award makes it clear that when it comes time to buy another vehicle, many Germans will be headed to their local Tesla store.
