Building on the success of an earlier 30 vehicle BYD e6 all-electric taxi pilot, Singapore taxi company HDT (which stands for Hold Dreams Together) issued a tender for another 100 electric taxis, which BYD (Build Your Dreams) won.

The new fleet represents the largest all-electric taxi service in Southeast Asia. As such, it directly supports Singapore’s goals of transitioning to a more sustainable means of getting around.

“This is only the beginning, as there will be more BYD products and services for Singaporeans in the future,” said Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division. “BYD will continue to support Singapore in its noble ambition for sustainable transportation.”

The new fleet utilizes the Grab ridesharing service that serves as a sort of Uber for taxi companies, connecting customers and drivers through a sleek mobile app.

With an exterior that looks like the lovechild of a Chrysler minivan and a Ford SUV, the BYD e6 SUV is 100% function, straight out of the box. This focus on function means it ends up being nearly purpose-built for taxi service — with a range of more than 400 kilometers, room for 4 passengers (and a driver), plus plenty of room in the back for gear.

The fleet is operated by HDT Holdings, which was excited by the incremental 100 BYD e6 being added to the fleet, noting their importance for not only financials, but for the HDT brand image:

“BYD’s electric cars have become our calling card,” said HDT Holdings General Manager James Ng.

As with most bulk purchases, the purchase price of the e6 was not revealed. Though, with lithium-ion battery pricing dropping through the floor over the last few years and with BYD adding lithium-ion production capacity like it’s going out of style, it’s safe to say the price should be lower than the first few pilots using the BYD e6 as taxis around the world.
