Nevada Official: Tesla Now Hiring 150–200 New Workers Every Month
Tesla is now hiring 150 to 200 new workers a month in Nevada, as part of the Gigafactory development effort at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center in Storey County, going by recent comments made by the head of the Nevada governor’s office of economic development.
The comments also revealed that Tesla has now hired over 1,000 workers for the development effort.
The exact comments concerning the current rate of hiring, as made by the Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, Steve Hill, at the recent Senate Finance Committee review of the budget for the coming period, were: “They’re hiring 150 to 200 more every month.”
So, not very ambiguous.
As it stands, expectations are that there will be around 3,200 workers at the Gigafactory site by March 2018, Hill also noted.
In addition to the comments about Tesla, Hill also made a number of allusions to Faraday Future’s development plans that were interesting. Most important of which was the comment that he expected that things are still moving forward with its manufacturing facility development plans in Nevada.
Here’s more on that from a local news source:
“Hill said an electric car company building in Southern Nevada has invested about $160 million so far, purchasing the property at Apex and funding the engineering and utility work there.
“He said Faraday has revealed its car, ‘which is a significant milestone that provides significant value for that company.’
“The next is to ‘manufacture it, get it out the door and sell it,’ he said. ‘The potential value of the company will jump then.’
“But instead of moving immediately to build a huge factory, Hill said they’re planning to ‘phase the construction of their facility’ and will break ground this spring on a 650,000 square foot factory that will open in 2018 and be able to make up to 12,000 cars a year.
“‘Frankly I think it’s a smart strategy,’ said Hill.”
A couple of reminders here:
→ Faraday Future had originally been planning to build a 1.6-million-square-foot manufacturing facility in Nevada.
→ The company received $335 million in tax breaks (Tesla received $1.1 billion, as a comparison).
→ After various rumblings about financial problems (and a number of lawsuits), the company revealed that it will initially “only” be building a 650,000 square foot plant — before later building out to the size of the original plans.
