A new Hobart, New York–based startup by the name of Bollinger Motors is working to develop and release what it claims will be the “world’s first all-electric on- and off-road sport utility truck,” according to recent reports.

The startup has apparently been quietly working on this plan since it was founded in 2014 — by Robert Bollinger, in the small town of Hobart in New York State’s Catskill Mountains.

Bollinger’s background is a rather interesting one, and he doesn’t seem like the “typical” entrepreneur behind most auto startups, electric or otherwise. Previous to founding Bollinger, he ran an organic hair and skincare business with a partner, worked in the advertising industry in New York City, and ran a grass-fed cattle farm. He apparently settled on the idea of an electric truck startup while running the farm.

Bollinger Motors will reportedly be unveiling a prototype of its electric utility truck sometime later this year.

“Bollinger Motors has flown under the radar since its founding more than a year ago, only now launching its website and establishing a presence on major social-media channels. However, the company has provided only a few details on its first product,” Green Car Reports notes.

“Bollinger’s website mentions a dual-motor all-wheel drive system, and promises both a 50/50 weight distribution and suitable ground clearance for off-road driving. … Bollinger’s website indicates the company’s first product will not be a full-size model, saying such a vehicle ‘is next’ after that first model.”

It’s hard to say at this point if there’s anything to this (as is almost always the case with startups), but the potential electric truck market is currently underserved, to say the least. … We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
