Spy pics of what appears to be a new, redesigned Nissan LEAF recently surfaced, giving us what is presumably our first real look at the next-gen version of the popular all-electric car — the world’s top-selling electric car in history, to be precise.

While nothing official has been revealed yet (so the Nissan LEAF seen in the pics may not actually look much like the final, refreshed LEAF does), the pics are certainly interesting. It appears that Nissan has definitely taken common criticisms of the LEAF’s external appearance into account … but probably not to as much of a degree as some would like.

To my eyes, the LEAF seen in the pics is definitely a better looking car than the ones on the road now, and would seemingly sell better as a result. But looks are highly subjective, so I’m curious to hear what those reading this think. An improvement? Nissan didn’t go far enough in revamping the model’s image? The current model’s appearance is better?

Autoblog (which bought rights to and shows the spy pics) provides more:

“Although the car in these photos is heavily camouflaged, we can still make out quite a few details. The new Leaf appears to take a lot of elements from the Nissan IDS concept, including the floating roof and angular headlights and taillights. Some of the concept car elements have been toned down, but from the side the two cars look very similar. The profile is also reminiscent of the current Nissan Murano.”

“The front appears to be far more aggressive than the current model, though it looks like it retains the flip-up panel that hides the charging ports. The headlights look much smaller and don’t appear to be as vertical as the current Leaf, though it looks like the new hood mimics that shape. The rear, like the front, is far more aggressive, with a larger spoiler. The clear taillight lenses appear to have been ditched.”

A reminder here: the refreshed Nissan LEAF is, in addition to a revamped appearance, expected to possess a much improved range and Nissan’s semi-autonomous ProPilot driving features — which will reportedly allow for fully autonomous single-lane highway travel.
