In an address to the World Economic Forum in Davos, China has told the world that it is willing and able to take the lead on combating global climate change.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, this week, China’s chief climate change negotiator and the country’s President have both spoken of China’s willingness and ability to take the lead role in combating global climate change. Further, negotiator Xie Zhenhua explained that China is willing to collaborate with all countries to achieve economic restructuring.

China has pledged to cut its emissions by 60% to 65% per unit of GDP by 2030, and as part of this the country is intending to implement a nationwide carbon trading market this year.

“The carbon trade will ensure transparency and will be operated based on market principles,” said Xie Zhenhua, speaking before the World Economic Forum meeting this week, who added that the trading system is expected to be in place by the end of this year. “China’s firm attitude to engage in global climate change actions will inject confidence amid a rising division between pro-globalization and anti-globalization.”

Xie Zhenhua also addressed the possibility that the United States under its new incoming President Donald Trump might break its promises to work with countries and lead the way on combating global climate change. “Collaboration on climate change has never ceased amid the political tensions,” said Xie Zhenhua, who added that he believed President-elect Donald Trump’s attitude toward climate change has actually shifted in recent weeks.

Speaking at the opening of the World Economic Forum annual meeting, Chinese President Xie Jinping has confirmed China’s intentions to be a global leader. For his full speech, see below:
