2 Biggest Utilities In Oregon File Plans For EV Support Efforts
In order to boost the rate of electric vehicle use amongst customers, the two biggest utility companies in Oregon — Portland General Electric and Pacific Power — have jointly filed plans to install new electric vehicle charging stations, to educate the public on plug-in vehicles, and to support the purchase of electric buses throughout the state.
The plans will reportedly see Portland General Electric (PGE) develop 6 new public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the state modeled on the previously developed “Electric Avenue” site in downtown Portland. Each of these will feature up to 4 dual-standard fast-charging stations and a 240-Volt Level 2 connector.
Green Car Reports provides more:
“It will also build and operate charging sites for electric buses to be run in Portland by TriMet, freeing capital for the transit agency to boost its purchase from four to five such buses.
“As for Pacific Power, it too will install public charging sites, and it plans to reduce certain electric rates to make electricity for DC fast-charging site operators far less expensive than it is today.
“Last spring, Oregon passed a Clean Electricity and Coal Transition Plan that requires Pacific Power and PGE to eliminate coal from their generating mix by 2030, and generate 50% of their electricity from renewable sources by 2040.
“Each utility plans pilot programs to ‘learn best-practices for fleet electrification, demand response, and vehicle to grid technology’ (PGE) and ‘offer financial support to customers exploring innovative community-based vehicle electrification ideas’ (Pacific Power).”
As far as the consumer outreach and education portion of the plans, the general idea is simply to let the customers of the utility companies know about the pricing and availability of various election vehicle offerings — and also the simple fact that there are such things as all-electric vehicles at all, a fact that many people are apparently unaware of.
