The popular on-demand taxi service Uber has launched a new luxury service in Madrid, Spain, that utilizes “dozens” of Tesla Model S sedans, according to recent reports. The service reportedly launched on December 22.

The new service, dubbed UberONE, is fairly similar to the UberBlack service available in many markets, with the primary difference being that UberONE will be using only all-electric Teslas, for those who are “environmentally conscious” (or image/status conscious). The Teslas are all equipped in the back seats with Microsoft Surface Pro tablets, reportedly, giving riders access to the internet, trip data, and a linked Spotify account.

The idea is apparently for the service to serve as a test of the general idea, with expansion following elsewhere if all goes well.

As far as pricing goes, UberONE is a fair bit more expensive than UberX, predictably — local UberX pricing is €0.10 per minute, with a minimum trip cost of €5, and UberONE runs €0.45 per minute, with a minimum trip cost of €8. Wait times should be similar for the two services, 5 to 10 minutes.

CNET provides more: “Uber has confirmed to CNET en Español that it will launch a luxury service in Madrid. … The company has explained that the intention is to help contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions in Madrid, a problem that this year has caused a prolonged restriction of traffic in the center of the Spanish capital, activating in a pioneering way to try to dispel the inconvenience.”

We reported on the traffic restrictions earlier this month, when it was also revealed that the mayor of Madrid has pledged to ban all diesel vehicles from the city center within the near future, as part of a multi-mayor pact at the recent C40 Mayors Summit in Mexico City.
