The first public electric vehicle charging station in the North African country of Morocco was recently launched by EV-Box and its partner in the affair, Vivo Energy, according to an email sent to CleanTechnica.

The new electric vehicle (EV) charging station was installed in anticipation of the recent COP22 climate change talks in Marrakech (November 7–18).

The development was the initiative of Vivo Energy Morocco — primarily, to date, a supplier of Shell-branded fuels and lubricants in the region. The move to EV charging station ownership seems likely to be a prudent diversification, considering the growing demand for EVs in the country.

The charging station has been installed at an existing Shell petrol station located at the Casablanca exit.

“We are so pleased to have Vivo Energy Morocco as a new partner to expand our solutions to the Morrocan market. We are also very honored to be able to support the worldwide event that advocates for sustainability,” stated Kristof Vereenooghe, CEO EV-Box.

A recent press release notes that Vivo Energy aims “to have introduced 700,000 electric vehicles by 2030” — which is intended to help the firm achieve the 12% CO2 transportation sector emissions reductions target set for that date.

“This approach is fully consistent with our objective to promote sustainable mobility through alternative methods, including electric mobility. The Shell brand in Morocco has a wide network, which will evolve & thus participate in the development of the use of electric vehicles and encourage the evolution of drivers’ practices,” stated Mr Asaf Sasaoglu, CEO of Vivo Energy Morocco. “Ultimately, our goal is to create a sustainable traffic movement in all of Morocco with a reliable EV charging infrastructure, that meets the standards of pioneering European countries.”

Initial plans are for a charging network to be established between Marrakech and Casablanca. Following this, there will be a gradual expansion until the whole country is served by charging stations.
