Home batteries are getting a lot more popular and their prices are dropping. There are more choices on the market than ever before: different sizes, different configurations, and a wide range of possible storage capacity from lower capacity for small households up to gargantuan storage space for homeowners with large energy needs. But where to begin the search when you are looking for a home energy storage solution that best serves your individual energy needs?

CleanTechnica is now offering its assistance: We created a dedicated page for comparing home battery storage options (products.cleantechnica.com/batteries/) as well as the following overview article, and we plan to update these every month. Although not all home batteries in the current marketplace are yet included, we aim to cover all of them and provide a good market overview for everyone interested. Our goal is to give you and others the tools to find the right home energy storage solution for your own individual energy needs.

Powerwall 2 — Tesla

The Powerwall 2 from Tesla is a home battery that is suitable for daily cycling. With its lithium-ion battery, it offers a variety of backup electricity supply solutions, ranging from night usage to emergency backup to going off the grid completely. Each Powerwall 2 has an energy storage capacity of 13.5 kWh. Homes with greater energy needs can install multiple batteries to enlarge the storage capacity and cover their consumption. The price for the Powerwall is $5,500 (probably without VAT), including a 10-year guarantee. The Powerwall 2 has a built-in inverter, which is typically not included in a home energy storage product.

Mercedes-Benz Home Battery — Mercedes-Benz

With its stationary energy storage system, Mercedes-Benz is now transferring its know-how for innovative energy storage solutions from the automobile industry to customers’ homes. The Mercedes-Benz Home Battery comes with a smart design and a lithium-ion battery that has an energy output of 2.5 kWh. Through the combination of up to 8 battery modules, homes with higher energy needs can individually customize their energy storage by enlarging its capacity to up to 20 kWh, enough to store up solar power for times when it’s needed or to react to expensive grid prices (daily cycling). The home battery costs between $9,000 and $10,000, including the cost of the inverter and installation, and has a guaranteed lifetime of 8,000 cycles or 10 years.

Apart from the lithium-ion batteries, the Powerpack also includes a $65,000 bi-directional 250 kW inverter and cabling as well as site support hardware. Depending on the commercial energy needs, customers are able to configure their Powerpack system individually, starting with an order of at least 2 Powerpacks up to a maximum of 54. Without installation, the cheapest Powerpack costs a total of $162,000 for 200 kWh of energy and 100 kW of peak power.
