Following the recent introduction of a new Golf, Volkswagen is apparently showcasing its new e-Golf at the ongoing Los Angeles Auto Show this week.

There are no real surprises from the look of it — more of the same (which some people will appreciate I guess), just with a somewhat bigger battery pack. The bigger battery pack allows for an improved but still limited (compared to the competition) range.

Since the car is more or less just a compliance car, none of this will matter much, except maybe to some people in California and a few other states. Those who prefer the Volkswagen badge to a Chevy, Nissan, or Tesla badge now get a better option in terms of range. (I’m including Tesla in this because certified pre-owned Tesla Model S sedans are not all that much more expensive than new VW e-Golfs at this point.)

There’s also growing and improving competition from other automakers. Toyota now has what many will consider a better offering on the market, with the new Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid (PHEV) offering a great deal of electric driving as well as great fuel economy on long trips..

The new battery packs possess a capacity of 35.8 kilowatt-hours (kWh), allowing for a range of 124 miles per full charge. This is up for the former max range of 83 miles.

Autoblog provides more: “VW gave the e-Golf a bit of extra pep, too. The motor now makes more power and torque with totals of 134 horsepower and 214 lb-ft of twist. Volkswagen claims this allows the 2017 e-Golf to get to 60 mph more than a second faster at 9.6 seconds. As with the rest of the Golf range, the e-Golf has slightly updated front and rear fascias, and new lights. The interior also looks roughly the same, but gets new infotainment features.”

Other improvements include the new Volkswagen Digital Cockpit — which combines all of the driver instruments on a 12.3-inch screen in front of the driver — and a new 9.2-inch touchscreen in the center. Reportedly, this center stack will allow for gesture control of various features at some point within the next 2 years.

As of yet, Volkswagen hasn’t released pricing or a release date for the new e-Golf.
