ABB Wins $40 Million South China Power Link Contract To Export Yunnan Hydro
ABB, the Swedish-Swiss multinational technology company, has been awarded the $40 million contract to help develop a transmission link in China which will facilitate the transmission of 5 GW of clean hydro between provinces.
The 800 kV Dianxibei-Guangdong ultra-high-voltage direct current transmission link is being developed by one of China’s two largest grid operators, China Southern Power Grid Company Limited, and upon completion will facilitate the transmission of 5 GW of hydro electricity from the Yunnan province in the southwest of the country to what is one of the most densely urbanized regions in the world, the Pearl River Delta region in Guangdong, in the country’s southeast.
According to The World Bank, the Pearl River Delta is the largest urban area in the world in terms of both size and population, a megacity with a population of approximately 120 million people. The region is also one of the country’s most important economic and manufacturing hubs, located on the South China Sea. Unsurprisingly, therefore, its energy needs are impressive.
The new power link will supply enough capacity to meet the annual power consumption needs of over 10 million people, and will significantly help reduce coal consumption in the region, thus mitigating intense carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide emissions.
“We are pleased that our advanced power technologies will enable the longest UHVDC link in southern China to deliver clean power to millions and lower environmental impact,” said Claudio Facchin, President of ABB’s Power Grids division. “Ultra-high-voltage technologies are a key element of our Next Level strategy and will help expansive countries like China to reliably and efficiently transport increasing amounts of clean, renewable power over greater distances.”
ABB will supply transmission line valves specifically designed to meet the needs of the harsh environment at the Xinsong converter station, in Yunnan province. ABB technologies will also be deployed at the Dongang converter station in Guangdong, and will supply dead-tank breakers, live-tank breakers, and DC capacitors, as well as equipment for converter valve towers and halls.
