India’s Rooftop Solar Power Capacity Tops 1 Gigawatt
India’s rooftop solar power sector has reached a major milestone in its very ambitious target.
According to Bridge To India, a consultancy group, India’s rooftop solar power capacity has topped 1 GW. Rooftop solar power in the country now stands at 1,020 MW with 513 MW capacity added over the last 12 months.
Interestingly, a majority of projects have been added by commercial and industrial consumers for captive consumption. These entities would likely have switched to rooftop solar power systems due to increasing electricity tariffs for industrial and commercial consumers.
Additionally, with favorable policies being enacted by the central and state governments, consumers are now also finding it easier to sell any surplus electricity from the rooftop solar power system through net-metering regulations.
India has set a target to have 100 GW of solar capacity operational by April 2022, including a target of 40 GW for rooftop solar power systems.
The government has taken initiatives to boost the development of the sector. The Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal that will increase the subsidy for rooftop solar power systems to $770 million by 2022, which is expected to be in addition to the debt funds raised from international development banks.
