BMW has now launched the BMW Cruise e-Bike line, available for $3,430, in North America.

The new line of e-bikes — all featuring BOSCH Performance Line electric motors — includes the “lightweight, quick BMW Cruise Bike for the casual rider in urban environments; the sporty, stylish, and dynamic BMW M Cruise Bike for the M enthusiast; as well as the BMW Junior Cruise Bike and the BMW Kids Bike, for younger BMW fans.”

The removable battery used in the BMW Cruise e-Bike — which can provide “optimal pedal support at speeds of up to 15 mph” — can be recharged on the bike or after being removed. It only takes around 3½ hours to completely recharge using a standard outlet, and only around 1½ hours to recharge to 50%.

The e-bike model features a bull-neck frame made of hydroformed aluminium developed in-house by BMW.

The Accessory and Lifestyle Manager at BMW North America, Eric Riehle, commented: “BMW aims to be the leading provider of premium mobility services, and our bicycle collection furthers that mission. As we enter the holiday season, these bikes make the perfect present for those wishing for their first BMW.”

The BMW branding will probably ensure decent enough sales, in spite of the relatively high pricing. Considering that a decent used car can be had for the same price, though, I wouldn’t expect many people other than enthusiasts to consider the model.

As far as used electric vehicles go, for those with an “environmental” slant to them, you can often find good-quality used Nissan Leafs for under $10,000 at this point. That’s only 2½ times the price of the BMW Cruise e-Bike — for a product with a great deal more utility.
