Leilani Münter To Drive In Inaugural 2017 Electric GT Race Series
October 9th, 2016 by Kyle Field
The Electric GT Championship spilled the beans that Leilani Münter has signed onto the world’s first 100% zero emissions GT Championship for the first race season, which will officially kick off in 2017. We previously announced that the series had selected the Tesla Model S P85+ as the official race vehicle, and now the teams and driver rosters are starting to fill up as excitement builds in advance of the first season.
The press release shares some additional detail on the series:
“The EGT Championship will consist of 20 international drivers, both male and female, racing for ten professional teams in identical Tesla Model S machines equipped with the latest OMP safety equipment and running on bespoke Pirelli tyres. The championship will race at seven permanent European circuits including the Nurburgring (Germany), Circuit Paul Ricard (France) and Circuit de Catalunya Barcelona (Spain), as well as competing at three non-championship race events in the Americas.”
We regularly cover the exciting life and times of our favorite “vegan hippy chick with a race car” Leilani Münter here on CleanTechnica, because it seems like she just can’t stop rallying for our planet in one way or another, which is awesome. Most recently, we shared the great work she was doing in Nevada to raise awareness for the fight for residential solar there, and it seems that one of her next campaigns has her back in the driver’s seat of yet another Tesla Model S … that is unlike any other Tesla Model S.
Driving in the inaugural first season of the Electric GT Championship is also just the next step in her racing career, as she has raced for many years in more conventional gasmobiles, which she has used as an extremely non-traditional platform for raising environmental awareness.
Hooking sponsors like solar companies, activist documentaries, and other similar companies, Leilani has brought environmental messages to many gearheads that would not otherwise hear anything of the sort … which is exactly her angle. Check out her website or follow her on Twitter at @LeilaniMunter for all the latest Leilani goodness.
Back to Electric GT, the teaser video (in the embedded tweet) announcing the new drivers also pulls the sheet off of one of the official Tesla Model S P85+ race vehicles that has been gutted and rebuilt for the track, and I have to say — I’m digging it! The pictures below really don’t really do it justice in my opinion — with the flared fenders, front valance and rear fin seeming nearly invisible in the pic — but you can hop down to the video for a bit of a better look at them.
