1st Commercial Battery Storage Project In Europe To Now Triple In Capacity
The energy storage software firm Younicos will be providing software and controls for Schwerin energy storage project expansion in Germany — which will see the utility company WEMAG’s energy storage resource triple its storage capacity to 14.5 megawatt-hours (MWh) from 5 MWh, and double it power output from 5 MW to 10 MW — according to an email sent to CleanTechnica.
Following the recent ground-breaking ceremony for the project, Younicos has been providing WEMAG with technical expertise during the implementation phase, in addition to the eventual provision of plant control software and power electronics.
The original Schwerin energy storage project was commissioned back in 2014, and was the first truly commercial battery storage project to operate in Europe at the time. It has taken an active part in the region’s frequency regulation market since then.
“The fact that WEMAG is now investing 5 million euros in order to increase the available power and energy for system service is a strong testament to the commercial success and performance of battery storage in Europe,” commented Alexander Schönfeldt, Younicos Vice President of Sales for EMEA.
The Minister for Energy, Infrastructure and Land Development of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Christian Pegel, commented as well (during a speech at the groundbreaking): “Especially with regard to the expansion of renewable energies and the future shutdown of old power plants, it is necessary to invest in technologies to ensure the quality of supply and grid stability. The battery park in Schwerin was a pioneer of this development and has impressively shown that new technologies are more than capable of providing system services in the future.”
Construction on the expansion is reportedly expected to finish by March 2017, with commissioning happening in June.
