Siemens Lands 147 MW Wind Turbine Order For Grant Plains Wind Project
One of the world’s largest engineering companies, Siemens, has been awarded another wind turbine contract, this time to the tune of 147 MW for the Grant Plains Wind project set to be developed in Oklahoma.
Siemens announced the order on Tuesday, revealing that renewable energy developer and owner Apex Clean Energy placed an order for 64 of Siemens’ SWT-2.3-108 wind turbines for the Grant Plains Wind project being developed in Oklahoma. The project is expected to have a total capacity of 147 MW, and upon completion and operation will generate the equivalent amount of electricity to supply more than 50,000 US households.
The Grant Plains Wind project is expected to be commissioned later this year, at which point Siemens will have contributed to three wind projects in the area — including the Grand Wind and Kay Wind projects, which together with Grant Plains will generate nearly 600 MW of clean electricity, and supply approximately 200,000 average US homes.
“We are very pleased to receive a follow up order from Apex Clean Energy to supply turbines for this wind project in Oklahoma,” said Jacob Andersen, CEO Onshore Americas of Siemens Wind Power and Renewables Division. “Once Grant Plains is operational, our expert service technicians from throughout the Midwest — including Oklahoma — will ensure the turbines perform at maximum capacity for many years to come.”
At the same time, APEX announced that Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power would acquire the project.
“The acquisition of the Grant Plains wind facility is an important step in strategically growing our renewable energy portfolio,” said Southern Power President and CEO Buzz Miller. “This project aligns with our business model and underscores our commitment to developing wind generation.”
