United States Has 10 GW Of Utility-Scale Solar PV Under Construction

New figures from GTM Research have revealed that the United States currently has 10 GW of utility-scale solar PV projects currently under construction.

The figures come courtesy of GTM Research’s Utility PV Market Tracker, which does exactly what its name claims it does.

It’s an impressive milestone for the US solar sector, considering that in February of this year, GTM Research, in tandem with the US Solar Energy Industries Association, were crowing over the record 7,286 MW the entire US solar sector installed during 2015.

Now, it’s likely a single segment of the country’s solar sector will install 10 GW over the next few quarters alone.

“We’re at a precipice where the pipeline of projects in development is larger than it has ever been,” said Colin Smith, an analyst with GTM Research. “Soon, we’re going to reach a point where the number of projects operating is going to be higher than the number of projects in development. We’ve never seen that before.”

In 2015, the country’s utility solar sector grew 6% and accounted for over half of the country’s total solar installations for the year.

With these impressive growth figures, it is unsurprising that in March, GTM predicted that the US solar market would grow by 119% in 2016, and install 16 GW.

I don't like paywalls. You don't like paywalls. Who likes paywalls? Here at CleanTechnica, we implemented a limited paywall for a while, but it always felt wrong — and it was always tough to decide what we should put behind there. In theory, your most exclusive and best content goes behind a paywall. But then fewer people read it! We just don't like paywalls, and so we've decided to ditch ours. Unfortunately, the media business is still a tough, cut-throat business with tiny margins. It's a never-ending Olympic challenge to stay above water or even perhaps — gasp — grow. So ...
