Danish wind energy giant Vestas is ranked as the world’s leading wind turbine manufacturer, in a new assessment from Navigant Research.

According to the new Navigant Research Leaderboard Report: Global Wind Turbine Vendors, Vestas leads GE Energy, Siemens, and Gamesa, as the world’s leading wind turbine manufacturers in terms of strategy and execution. Specifically, the report investigated the strategy and execution of 12 wind turbine OEMs (original equipment manufacturers).

“Wind turbine manufacturers are primarily ranked in terms of total megawatts installed in a given year, but a more interesting story looks at differences in strategy and execution, product offerings, geographic diversification, and a mix of qualitative factors at play in this competitive and dynamic marketplace,” said Jesse Broehl, senior research analyst with Navigant Research. “Today’s top-tier vendors are excelling by showing brisk activity throughout many global markets and have an exceptional command of manufacturing, supply chain, and business relationships.”

As one of the world’s fastest growing energy markets, the global wind sector installed 63.1 GW of wind power capacity in 2015, a 23.2% increase over the year before. Cumulatively, global wind power capacity sat at 434.1 GW by the end of 2015, and is expected to skyrocket to 705.5 GW by 2020. This increased installed capacity has resulted in greater turbine efficiency and “a sophisticated large-scale supply chain provided by the wind turbine OEMs.”
