American renewable energy company Renewable Energy Systems has confirmed it will construct and operate the 102 MW Lamesa Solar Facility.

The 102 MW Lamesa Solar Facility will be developed in Dawson County, Texas, and will be owned by Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company. The project was originally being developed by BNB Renewable Energy Holdings, before entering into a joint development agreement with Renewable Energy Systems (RES) in mid-2015 to complete the project.

Construction is expected to start sometime this month, and upon expected completion in mid-2017, the Lamesa Solar Facility will be made up of 410,000 solar PV panels, and its 102 MW will generate enough electricity to supply the equivalent needs of approximately 26,000 US homes.

“This project is our third and largest solar project in Texas, having already constructed more than 70 MW in the state,” said Chad Horton, VP, RES Development, Americas. “We look forward to working with BNB to bring more solar energy online in Texas. RES has been committed to bringing renewable energy to the state, having developed and or constructed more than 2,300 MW of wind to date.”

“A lot of important stakeholders worked together to make this project happen,” added Jos Nicholas, a partner at BNB. “On behalf of Southern, RES, and BNB, I want to thank the many landowners and City of Lamesa and Dawson County officials who played an instrumental role throughout the development process.”

Southern Company made the announcement that it had acquired the Lamesa Solar Facility this week, its third Texas solar project in less than a year.

“The Lamesa project is an excellent fit for Southern Power’s business model,” said Southern Power President and CEO Buzz Miller. “We are committed to developing renewable energy sources and are pleased with the continued growth of our solar portfolio.”

This brings Southern Company’s total renewable energy generating capacity up to 2,200 MW, with 29 solar, wind, and biomass projects in operation or under construction across the United States.
