Dutch technology company Royal Philips has committed to a new sustainability program that it hopes will render its operations carbon neutral by 2020.

Philips-1Royal Philips, more commonly known simply as Philips, announced this week a new 5-year sustainability program, “Healthy people, sustainable planet.” The company announced the program during a webinar hosted by the company’s CEO, Frans van Houten. According to the company’s accompanying press release, “This new program builds on Philips’ objective to improve the lives of three billion people a year in 2025 by making the world healthier and more sustainable through innovation.” Philips intends to focus on three pillars:

  • Creating value for Philips’ customers through sustainable solutions
  • Leading by example in its sustainable operations
  • Multiplying its impact by driving sustainability through its supply chain

Specifically, Philips has set three new 2020 targets:

  • 70% of turnover from green revenues and 15% from circular revenues
  • Carbon-neutral operations, 100% renewable electricity
  • Enhanced supplier sustainability to deliver structural improvements

“I am extremely proud to share the ‘Healthy people, sustainable planet’ program,” said Frans van Houten. “At Philips, we fully embrace sustainability, because of its benefits for society, and because we believe that it is a driver for economic growth. That’s why sustainability is an integral part of our company strategy.”

“Our new program reflects our commitment to the universally agreed United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially those to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages, and to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. We have set ambitious targets for our innovations, products, solutions, operations and the business partners we work with, to meet those objectives.”

Philips was one of 13 original corporate partners to The Climate Group’s RE100, a global initiative committed to 100% renewable electricity in the private sector. Philips has also been recognized three years in a row by CDP with a perfect score for its corporate action on climate change.
