Siemens has been awarded a contract to supply 385 MW of 6 MW offshore wind turbines for the Arkona Offshore Wind Farm in the German Baltic Sea.

The German-based global technology company announced the news this week, revealing that a consortium between the German power provider E.ON based in Essen, and the Norwegian oil and gas company Statoil, placed the order for 60 6 MW direct-drive offshore wind turbines.

Siemens will install 60 SWT-6.0-154 wind turbines at the Arkona wind farm around 35 kilometers north-east of the island of Rügen. The Arkona Offshore Wind Farm will likely come online in 2019, and with a capacity of 385 MW will supply the equivalent electricity necessary to power 400,000 German households. Located around 35 kilometers north-east of the island of Rügen, the Arkona Offshore Wind Farm will cover approximately 40 square kilometers, with installation of the turbines expected to begin in the summer of 2018.

“This is the first order for our large direct-drive offshore wind turbines for a project in the Baltic Sea,” said Michael Hannibal, Offshore CEO of the Siemens Wind Power and Renewables Division. “This is also the second offshore wind farm that we will be erecting for E.ON in German waters. We are pleased that E.ON and Statoil have once again chosen one of our offshore wind turbines for a new offshore wind power plant so we can continue our very good partnership with these two companies.”

Siemens will also provide service to the wind turbines for an initial two year period in conjunction with E.ON.

The last we heard from Siemens was earlier in the month, when it was awarded a smaller contract to supply 13 of its SWT-3.2-101 turbines to the 41.6 MW Eurus Higashi Yurihara wind power plant, developed in Yurihonjo city – located in the north of the mainland Honshu.
