Catching The Sun Solar Power Film Screenings
A new documentary called Catching the Sun, about the solar power industry, has been created by Shalini Kantayya and has theatrical releases set for April in New York City and Los Angeles. A national screen tour will bring the film to other US cities before Earth Day.
Danny Kennedy, Jigar Shah, David Crane, and Van Jones are featured in the film. Shah wrote in a LinkedIn post, “Start with family, friends, and co-workers. Since I first sent this email out a week ago, the solar industry has sponsored 100+ screenings of this film around the USA. Please secure your tickets before April 5th so that all of the screenings will be supported by the local theaters.”
Kantayya is a Fulbright Scholar, a Sundance Fellow, and a TED fellow. Her films have a focus on energy, water, food, and human rights. She has a BA in Media Studies and International Human Rights from Hampshire College, and an MFA in Film Direction from the City College of New York.
“A must-see film. An eye-opening look at workers and entrepreneurs on the forefront of the clean energy movement that will transform, enliven the way you see the future. What is clear is the wonderful opportunity the transition to clean energy represents,” said actor Mark Ruffalo. Kantayya won an award at the Palm Beach International Film Festival for her science-fiction short, ‘Drop of Life’.
In an interview, she explained the film’s take on the solar power industry and the economic terms. She says that one thing which is different about her film from other climate change films, is that it focuses on people and their lives more than other topics. She also explains she received no money from the solar power industry when she was making the film.
She also has founded a media production company called 7th Empire Media.
