LED streetlights aren’t anything new, but one company has taken that idea to a whole new level. Autoblog shared a report on an exciting new modular streetlight solution that stands at the convergence of the Internet of Things, energy efficient LED lighting, and solar panels.

EnGoPlanet recently announced a partnership with the City of Las Vegas that will bring cutting-edge, zero-emission lighting to Sin City. As part of the partnership, EnGoPlanet will install its innovative solar-kinetic streetlights solution at Boulder Plaza. It will be the first-ever installation in the world of this street lighting technology that combines both kinetic and solar energy in a completely off-grid solution.

EnGoPlanet’s new streetlight has the environmental impact of streetlights locked in its sights, with an aim to make a dent in the estimated 100 million tons of CO2 released every year to power the 300 million streetlights scattered around the globe. “How?,” you may ask. By building an off-grid LED streetlight powered by an integrated solar panel that also just happens to be packed with exciting add-ons like USB and wireless device charging, sensors to gather data for air quality and traffic, video surveillance, and even a water detector (rain meter). There’s also a kinetic pad charging from passersby, and a bit of integrated WiFi to round things out.

Chip in a few dollars a month to help support independent cleantech coverage that helps to accelerate the cleantech revolution!

BYD has standalone LED/solar lights, but they come with a much more utilitarian aesthetic. Conversely, these beautiful EnGoPlanet creations are works of art with solar panels gently draped over the LED light fixtures, as if a leaf leaning over after a long day of converting CO2 into precious O2. The optional under-leaf color LEDs allow for more creative expressions that can be updated at the click of a button for each new holiday, season, or event.

I was personally waiting for the big reveal of a Level 2 car charger integrated into the post, but as these units are standalone and not grid connected, it is simply not practical to charge an EV off of a single panel, irregardless of the efficiency of the cells.

Petar Mirovic, CEO of EnGoPLANET, said of the new street light product: “Our generation has the moral responsibility to transform our energy system. EnGoPLANET’s Street Light solution will revolutionize the way we illuminate streets. It will reduce CO2 consumption by using only renewable energy sources, and also lowers maintenance bills. With many new features, these street lights will make cities smarter.”
