Tesla Motors Kicks Off 2016 Referral Program

To kick off 2016, Tesla has announced a new and improved — or at least updated — referral program. This is just about the only way to get a discount or credit on a Model S. Elon Musk mentioned this in Tesla’s Q4 earnings call, stating proudly that even he had to pay full price for his Tesla. Having said that, the program as it exists in 2016 is not as robust as in the past.

tesla_modelS_blackonblackFor buyers using a referral link from a current Tesla owner, a $1,200 credit is granted specifically for the installation of a home charger. This enables up to 3 referrals per owner to get a head start on getting charging set up the right way at home. It feels like Tesla is also trying to incentivize the installation of home chargers to motivate owners to charge at home vs relying on public charging — specifically, Supercharging.

So, what does a Tesla owner get for referring someone to buy a $70,000+ car? One referrer will win a brand new Tesla Model X Ludicrous P90D, aka “the fully loaded Model X,” as well as a tour for two of the SpaceX headquarters in Los Angeles, including all travel and accommodations. With a waiting list for a Model X of over a year and SpaceX not being open to the public, this is an eXtremely eXclusive offer. Another five referrers will win a tour for two of SpaceX HQ, including travel and accommodations.

It’s great to see the program extended, but doesn’t really feel like a huge incentive for people to refer buyers with only 6 people actually getting a reward from the program. One caveat for the program is that it is only applicable for purchases of Model S — not X or 3, which the masses will start queuing up for on March 31st, after the big reveal at the Fremont factory.

Check out the official rules and restrictions for the program below. My favorite bit is the “Good Faith” section with the exclusion for “nefarious scenarios.” 😀

Limits
Related Model S order must be placed after February 16, 2016 and delivered by April 15, 2016 for a referral code to qualify. Pre-owned vehicles are not eligible. Limit 3 referrals per owner. SpaceX tours are subject to the visitor meeting facility entrance eligibility criteria.

No entry fee, payment or purchase required for the drawing. Must be at least 18 years old to be eligible for giveaways. A random drawing with qualified referral codes will be held on or about April 30, 2016 to determine the winners, who will be contacted thereafter. Each referrer is only eligible to win a single giveaway, regardless of the number or referral codes entered into the drawing. Giveaways are non-transferable and not redeemable for cash. The winner is responsible for all taxes and local requirements and fees. Giveaways are subject to local laws and regulations. Unfortunately, Ohio residents are not eligible for the giveaways.

Good Faith
We introduce programs such as these in good faith and expect the same good faith in return. Please note that we may withhold awards where we believe customers are acting in bad faith or otherwise acting contrary to the intent of this program. To be clear, commercializing or otherwise selling referral codes is not appropriate, and we will not honor such codes. We cannot cover every nefarious scenario, nor will we attempt to, but we do promise to be fair and reasonable.
