Solarcentury Expands European Presence With German Solar Farm
UK-based solar energy company Solarcentury has expanded its European footprint by building and selling its first solar farm in Germany.
Solarcentury announced on its website that it has developed, constructed, and sold the 4.7 MW Calvörde solar farm, located in Sachsen-Anhalt state, eastern Germany. The solar farm, though small and providing only enough electricity to power the equivalent of 1,150 local homes, represents the company’s continuing expansion throughout Europe. The company already has field experience in Germany, having installed several rooftop installations over the last decade, but Calvörde is the first utility-scale project to be developed in Germany.
“Calvörde solar farm is the first in a pipeline of new projects we are looking at in Germany,” said Nikolaus Krane, Director for Solarcentury in Germany. “The levelised cost of solar electricity in Germany is below the wholesale market price for industrial/commercial off-takers, which makes ground mounted solar of this size financially viable.”
Solarcentury took control of the whole Calvörde project, developing the rights for the site, securing debt financing and investment, designing the system, and managing the entire build. The Calvörde project makes use of the new auction tariff for ground-mount installations in Germany which was introduced in April, 2015, and is the first of 25 projects awarded which together total a combined capacity of 150 MW.
“The German market is highly competitive but the Calvörde solar farm demonstrates that with the right partnerships in place, it is possible to deliver successful solar projects,” said Frans van den Heuvel, CEO at Solarcentury. “This latest project is part of Solarcentury’s international growth strategy, bringing our engineering expertise and experience to deliver solar projects in Africa and LatAm, and in European markets.”
