Indian State Plans Incubator For Renewable Energy Start-ups

With an aim to increase investment and expand technical know-how in the renewable energy sector, one of India’s states is planning to set up an incubator for start-ups.

The southern state of Telangana has announced plans to expand infrastructure for renewable energy start-ups to help them expand and acquire latest technical knowledge. The state government has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Texas at Austin to facilitate transfer of technical and management knowledge to the start-ups.

India plans to have operational renewable energy capacity of 175 GW by April 2022. This will be a massive expansion from the current 37 GW operational capacity. Encouraging small companies to work in the development of the sector may be a critical step towards achieving that target.

Start-ups may also play an essential role in the proliferation of small-scale renewable energy technology among the end users. Rooftop solar power projects are not as popular as the government would like them to be in order to achieve the 40 GW installed capacity as part of the 100 GW solar power target. Start-ups can work at a local level with the local government authorities to help end users adopt rooftop solar power technologies.

The plan by Telangana is part of the central government’s ‘Start-up India, Stand-up India’ initiative to encourage new start-ups. Telangana, itself, has ambitious renewable energy targets. The state government plans to have 3.7 GW of solar power capacity operational by March 2017. Auctions for large-scale solar power projects have already been started. Earlier, this year the state government allocated 2 GW solar power capacity in the largest auction in the country so far.
