Navigant Research: Majority Of World’s Microgrids Are Now “Remote” Ones

The majority of the world’s microgrid projects are now remote microgrids, according to a new report from Navigant Research.

The new report — “Microgrid Deployment Tracker 4Q15” — offers, along with analysis, data on the various microgrid projects around the world currently (both remote and grid-tied ones), regardless of development stage (active, planned, proposed, etc).

The report notes that there are at least 1,437 micro-grid projects worldwide currently (as of the 4th quarter of 2015) — altogether totaling over 13 gigawatts (GW) in capacity. That total includes 816 megawatts (MW) of projects in the Arctic portion of Russia.

“This latest version of the Microgrid Deployment Tracker underscores that microgrids are becoming an increasingly global phenomenon,” stated Peter Asmus, principal research analyst with Navigant Research. “This update revealed more than 1,300 MW of newly identified capacity and found that more than 100 countries now have microgrid projects deployed.”

According to the report, the US still possesses the highest microgrid capacity of any country in the world (42% of the total market), but the Asia Pacific region has emerged as the new market leader in recent times.

The 7 microgrid sectors characterized in the new report are: commercial/industrial, community, utility distribution, institutional/campus, military, remote, and direct current (DC) systems.
