The United States deployed 60.3 MW of energy storage during the third quarter of the year, bringing the year’s cumulative total up over 100 MW.

The figures come by way of GTM Research’s US Energy Storage Monitor report published this week, and represent a twofold increase on figures from the third quarter of 2014, and a 46% increase from the second quarter of 2015.

As a result, the cumulative total for energy storage deployment in the US during 2015 has reached 108 MW, equating to 94 megawatt-hours, and representing the first time that the US has ever installed over 100 MW of energy storage in any given year — meaning 2015 is set to be a record-busting year.

“As expected, 2015 is turning out to be a breakout year for the U.S. energy storage market,” said Ravi Manghani, senior storage analyst at GTM Research. “Even though we’ve seen the PJM market dominating megawatts of deployments so far, the third quarter of 2015 had utility-scale deployments in states like Georgia and Vermont. Energy storage has started to appear in different utility requests for proposals and grid planning across states, another indication that utilities and policymakers are getting comfortable with the technology and the multiple values it can provide.”

Energy storage investment in the US market has so far reached $265 million, well above 2012 and 2013 figures, but falling behind 2011 and 2014 numbers.

Utility-scale, or front-of-meter storage capacity accounted for the majority of deployed capacity in the third quarter, with 46.6 MW pushing the segment to its best quarter since the end of 2012. There was 13.7 MW worth of behind-the-meter energy storage in the third quarter, bringing the segment’s cumulative annual total up to 18.8 MW.

“Storage brings value to all parts of the grid,” said Matt Roberts, executive director of the Energy Storage Association. “We are seeing that demonstrated in the diversity of markets where storage is being deployed. And storage is reliable and increasingly cost-competitive, so not only is utility-scale storage continuing to expand, but customer-sited storage is growing rapidly as well.”
