Spanish wind energy giant Gamesa has boosted its involvement in North America by joining the American Business Act on Climate Pledge and committing further to Mexico.

One of the world’s leading wind energy manufacturers, Gamesa made two announcements on December 1 to coincide with the COP21 United Nations climate negotiations currently being held in France.

Gamesa first announced that it had joined the American Business Act on Climate Pledge, joining more than 140 existing companies from across the American economy that have already taken the Pledge to stand with President Obama and his administration in demonstrating an ongoing commitment to climate action. The Pledge also calls for a strong outcome out of the COP21 Paris climate negotiations.

“Gamesa is a leader in delivering clean energy in the US and worldwide,” said Borja Negro, CEO of Gamesa North America. “We have installed more than 26,000 wind turbines worldwide in the past 21 years, preventing the emission of an estimated 50 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. As a leader in clean energy supply, we applaud initiatives to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy.”

At the same time, Gamesa announced that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Mexican Electricity Board for the sole purpose of fostering wind energy development in Mexico.

The two companies intend to find ways to encourage technological, industrial, and supply chain development for the wind energy industry in Mexico “and to champion research, development, and innovation in the renewable energy field.”

“This MoU with the CFE highlights Gamesa’s commitment to the Mexican market, where, in addition to developing and on-selling wind farms, it supplies, installs and services wind turbines,” said Hipólito Suárez, Gamesa’s Managing Director for Mexico & Latam. “Execution of this agreement will lead to the creation of hundreds of jobs in the tower manufacturing area and by nurturing a local supply chain capable of manufacturing major parts not only for the Mexican market but also for the US.”

Gamesa has already made a name for itself in Mexico by becoming the country’s leading wind OEM (a title it also holds in India).
